The Feels of Cinesthesia

After a week of films, personalities, attitudes and budding feelings, I would say that my second year indulging myself to Cinemalaya Independent Films was worth it.

I never would have thought that I would obsess over the Philippine indie scene after seeing Thelma, directed by Paul Soriano, last year. From then on, I invested my time on independent movies and checking out directors as well as scriptwriters. And to fully submerge myself into the world of these unconventional thinkers, I needed to go back to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) to watch films that I felt at that time would give me jitters and cause mind blowing-ness. (if that is even a word. Maybe not.)

And from July 28-29 and August 3-4, I truly was blown away by the captivating stories presented this year. And though I haven't necessarily said my individual assessments on the films, the whole experience was endearing and worth-while.

Now with my individual assessments, I wouldn't be sugar-coating things though I did say the stories were captivating. Just you know, read. You'll understand. HAHA!

I've seen only 10 films: 7 from the New Breed Category Full Length features and 3 from the Directors' Showcase Category. Unfortunately, I didn't get tickets for the shorts because of the shortage of tickets and seats.

OLD MOVIE REVIEW: THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985)

As the quote in the beginning goes,

“And these children that you spit on

as they try to change their worlds

are immune to your consultations.

They’re quite aware of what they’re going through…”

This made me want to listen to the whole song written and performed by David Bowie. Anyway, the movie caters to the stereotypes usually found in high school. On a Saturday, six students get detention. Each have their reasons for being there. And through sorting out their differences, they form a mutual bond through a common problem: PARENTS

In a way, we are what we are to what our parents make of us. If our parents pamper us, we end up spoiled and greedy towards material possessions and end up being couch potatoes. If we get beaten and verbally abused, we shun ourselves from them and be the rebellious child they never wanted. And when they have such high expectations, we end becoming the social misfits of the world by being shut-ins.

Pretty much, this problem is explored in the movie as each character explain their undertakings within their household and the feelings they keep inside as they cannot find any reason to say anything.

The movie tackles a story quite common to the young generation of today. It’s quite different from the “now” typical story of teen bullying. You could say that the parents are the bullies in this case.

Each of us have these feelings toward our parents somehow. A certain longing that they couldn’t give or some hatred that they instilled which we’ll take till our wake. The story, though in just one setting, brings about that homely and shared feeling.

The Angst of A College Student Going Through...

The Start of The School Year. Yeah, college mongrels! We are back to that particular time when getting a tan and hanging out for bowling is totally out of the picture. Yes! Classes are back. Time to make ourselves suffer by getting good to great grades and making our wonderful parents proud.

But I’m not entirely exultant by the coming ringing of school bells. I feel dejected. The summer, was never my friend. Yeah, I indulged myself in movies. Yeah, I made a fool of myself by singing with a perfume bottle with one hand to consume time. But it’s as if I’ve completely lost a sort of touch by the summer heat. I have become a total shut-in.

I admit to always staying indoors. That is my fault and I completely rest my case but nothing came up while I was waiting for phone calls or great opportunities to go swim or go out of the country.

It’s not that I hate school. The problem is I still don’t feel like going back yet. And whenever I watch Phineas and Ferb on Disney Asia, I would feel more dejected especially coz of that opening theme:

“There’s a 104 days of summer vacation,

and school comes along just to end it.

So the annual problem for our generation,

is finding a good way to spend it. Like maybe…”

HUMAN CLASSIFICATION : WEIRDO

Weird, adj. A trait or characteristic of a person who does things in a uniquely odd fashion. It could also be used to describe someone who speaks or does things not ordinary to people in his or her environment. n., weirdo, misfit, dweeb, eccentric

Credits of Trendland

Yes folks. I am most certainly a weirdo. Don’t worry. Not in a perverted sort of
way. You can be rest assured I am sane enough to not allow myself to do something so senile but at the same time, let me warn you that I can be quite the perv sometimes, which goes to show how messed up my first statement of defense was.

I speak and act accordingly to what I want and not what others want. In the case of teachers, that’s another story. You could say I have breaches to the security of my own thoughts; spontaneous in layman’s terms. I get the saying, “You’re so weird.” all the time. I’d take it as a compliment actually. I have become immune to trying to fit the norms of the people who have some sort of inhibitions in them.

In all honesty, I was once someone who just wanted to fit in with the crowd be with the cool kids and stand-out. But I guess in my choice of inklings and my odd personality, I stood-out, not in a good way. I had hated being called weird. It was just something I could not accept myself. It was probably because of peer pressure. Yeah, peer pressure’s a B. It’s just that being in high school and having such a peculiar way of being human didn’t quite make a good combo. I barely made friends. It was quite the miracle that I got some. What I’m saying is that I wanted to have lots of friends back then and being weird didn’t actually provide me the grounds to having the majority.

For some strange reason, I came into terms with my oddity. We had a good long talk. She had her side while I had mine. She was quite persistent if I say so myself. In the end, I realized that that is how I was and that being weird is how I can classify myself as a human being and how God planned that I become the weird one in the group.

So yeah, I came to accept the fact that I sometimes blurt out my feelings or my thoughts are way beyond what people normally would hear or believe in. I would end up liking the movie that someone hated or would understand the unconventional. I would be emphatic about what happens towards fictional characters. And of course, add to that me talking to myself in the mirror. A lot.

It’s not so bad to be the different one. It’s exciting actually. I don’t have to pretend to be somebody I’m not and at the same time, I could truly be happy with myself. Do not be discouraged if you’re not like someone you admire or if you not part of the in-crowd. As long as you know you are yourself, there’s no reason to change. Well, that’s if you have some psychological problem. You might want to see a psychiatrist for that or maybe I should…:p

To Play Doctor Again

If you guys aren’t fully aware, I was actually a nursing student even before I ended up taking a communication course (which I’m guessing you’re not fully aware of either). It was over a year and a half or so of white clothes, an exception of gray during the half year, bun hairs and clean cuts.

Probably the reason why I ended up anything around the field of medicine was because of influence. Anyone is surrounded by influence, both good and bad. I ended up with the good kind being that my aunts are nurses and that I owe my life to nurses and of course doctors. Let’s just say, I felt like I needed to give back.

Dedicated to the field till my field of vision tilted to other possibilities, I learned the ups and downs of how to take care of people. Well, not to the extent of having to read med books. It was more like playing Doogie Howser towards my brothers and cousins.

Anyway, things changed and now like I said, I’m a communication student, happily taking the course and making use of the vast possibilities ahead of me. Using my over imaginative mind, I headed forward.

But recently, I had to play doctor again, reminded by my roots. My brother ended up in the hospital coz of gastro arthritis. He had to stay at the hospital for three days. It was antagonizing for my father since my brother had to be confined on his very birthday nad of course he hated seeing all of us in the hospital, let alone get sick. To put it in basic terms, he thinks about how much it’ll cost him. Typical Dad. (PEACE ^_^\/)

So I was saying, my brother was sick and now, he’s back home, scrawny and pretty pathetic. That’s what you get for eating too much! Glutton. Not that I’m saying that I hate my brother, just that any sister would be worried and mad at the same time, right? Or is that just me. Anyway, Mom told me to be a doll ( which I’m not) and take care of my brother and give him his medicines on the right time. Great -_-... As the eldest and the only girl out of all the children my parents have, I should be responsible and do the task given out. I mostly had no choice.

It felt nostalgic to read prescriptions again. I dunno. It’s not like I had this experience before at school, but it reminded me of the times when I played with old stethoscopes and looked at prescriptions of my own medicines before. As usual, doctors are sadists. Even with their handwriting. Do the seriously think that every person would understand their scribbly writing? It’s a miracle pharmacist could even decipher the things.

It’s fun. I guess. Having to wait every two hours for every tab of meds to give my brother to drink. It somehow jolted a sensation in my heart, not bitterness or a pang, but some sort of longing. If I’m being honest with myself, I miss the short amount of time I offered to the field of studying nursing. But at the same time, I have no regrets. It was fun while it lasted.

A Fine Line

“And you tell me to do that? Go to hell.” Okay. I haven’t actually said this live or to anyone in their face. This is something I spontaneously thought of during a time when someone pissed the heck out of me.

They say I’m a nice girl. Yeah, I’m pretty nice. I like being nice and friendly to people. But there is a fine line separating my kindness and my anger. Yeah, I remember saying on an essay on my Personality Development class that I have a high tolerance over something that could make me angry. It’s true. But that tolerance is pretty much in the border of that very thin thread that could cause me to have a nervous breakdown every time.

But the tolerant soldiers in my head get weak too especially when I get annoyed to the extreme. I try to get along with people but if you went overboard, I don’t know what I will do.

At the moment, I could say that I could control the fumes of my rage through cursing in my head and looking at the people with stink eyes. While I’ve done it with such a few number of people, I dunno if it’s even possible to call it a “stink eye”.

What I’m saying is, I’m not that much of a human being when I’m cross. I mean, I could count to ten but I think I’m allowed to give people a piece of my mind from time to time. It isn’t fair that I suffer inside without them knowing how much I actually hate them.

I just hope that anyone whom I know reads this, they won’t try to get into my bad side. Not that I’m threatening you guys. It’s more like I don’t want you to see me at my worst state. I definitely freak. And this is just an understatement. I’ve just said them in my head. I’m not pretty sure it’ll sound nice when I say it out loud. Just sayin’.

WORK ON YOUR PITCHES: PITCH PERFECT 2 OUT ON 2015

That’s right. News of the sequel to the popular movie: PITCH PERFECT is now on the works. So we’ll be expecting Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin and the ever lovable and pitch-slappin’ FAT AMY played by Aussie comedian Rebel Wilson, hit the big screen again. And it seems that new characters are gonna settle in since the movie ended with an audition. *wink wink*

The said sequel will premiere on 2015, so we still have some time to make predictions and what-not on how the sequel will end up.

First things first. COMEDY. Of course we are gonna expect some laughs, especially since Rebel Wilson is still involved. We are gonna be seein’ some horizontal runnin’ and probably some mermaid dancing 2.0.

And since it’s called “PITCH” Perfect, then definitely there’s MUSIC. We’ll probably end up with more riff-offs, group acapella singing and some serious competition for the new ICCA championship. And who would not want his or her favorite song to be featured in the new movie? I wish they’d sing Anything Could Happen by Ellie Goulding. Anything could happen, right? So I’m crossing my fingers.

Lastly, that ROMANCE vibe that every teenage girl likes, including me. Now, I’m not that girly-girly but I get way too taken with lovey-dovey scenes. The previous movie had a few scenes, so we can undoubtedly expect a deeper relationship between Beca and Jesse and hopefully a couple addition too. Oooh! And a foil to their relationship would be fun too! HAHAHA!

Two years to go yet I have so much expectations with the movie already. I just can’t wait to laugh and sing-out to the new movie. Better make sure that my pitch is perfect too. LOL.

Now, tell me what you think! That would be fun! :D

A Freeloader...Kinda

The summer has been quite a busy season for me. Basically coz "someone" (my friend) has been inviting me over her place every day. Well, not every day, but something like that. Anyway, since hanging out usually in her den, I must say that I had tons of fun. Doing projects that aren't exactly mine, going to places I've never been before and going to a concert I never actually expected. So thank you QD, for being a great friend and making me a freeloader at your place, kinda... HAHA... Thank You
